Northern Cyprus student and parent housing guide

Compare dormitories, rented homes, campus journeys and the full cost of settling in. A daily-life companion to the university application guide.

Find the teaching address before choosing a town

Identify the actual campus where your admitted programme is taught. A university may use several buildings or locations. Narrow the housing shortlist around that address. Compare the return journey after classes, evening study and at weekends; a short distance on a map does not necessarily mean straightforward everyday transport.

Compare dormitories and rent over the same period

Compare the academic-period total rather than a monthly headline. EMU dormitory rules say fees are announced for the academic year; do not transfer that policy to other accommodation. Include electricity, water, internet, food, laundry, transport and initial setup. Show a refundable deposit separately as money needed at the start rather than automatically treating it as spending.

Contracts and sharing a room

Confirm whether the room is private or shared, its inventory, guest rules and departure conditions in writing. For private rentals, clarify the parties, payment currency, handover date, deposit return and maintenance responsibilities. Agree bills, cleaning and quiet hours with housemates. Keep receipts and handover photographs; a property listing does not replace a tenancy contract.

Shuttles, internet and study conditions

METU Northern Cyprus Campus publishes campus, Kalkanlı and Güzelyurt shuttle information. Check the current route against your timetable rather than applying it to other universities. If possible, test home internet with your own device and ask about installation and charges. Assess a quiet study area, sockets and lighting separately from the attractiveness of room photographs.

Summer stays and first arrival

Do not assume an academic-year booking includes summer school, holidays or early arrival. Ask about check-in, key collection, late arrival and luggage storage. Foreign higher-education students have a separate student residence process; check that university registration details are correct in YÖKAS. An admission letter is not an accommodation reservation.

A joint parent plan with student independence

Agree a monthly budget, a contact person when needed and a plan for unexpected expenses. Contact university student affairs and support teams directly. During the first week, organise groceries, phone service, class routes and payment records. Arrange regular family updates while protecting the student’s accounts and personal documents; support need not require sharing every password.

Is a dormitory or a rented home cheaper?

There is no universal answer. Compare written offers over identical dates, including utilities, food, transport and initial cash needs. This page guarantees neither market prices nor available rooms.

Can I keep the same room during summer?

That depends on the accommodation contract. Confirm summer-school, holiday, room-change and extra-charge conditions in writing before booking.
